Earthquake Response Initiative

A deadly earthquake hit Nepal, destroying homes, roads and infrastructure and claiming over 8 thousand lives. Many more are injured and hundreds of thousands have been displaced. The children particularly are in danger after this devastating earthquake. There is a need of urgent life-saving assistance like clean shelter, water, basic health care services especially targeted to children. There is also an urgent need to enable children to go to school. But they are not able to return to school as almost nine out of 10 schools have been destroyed in the hard-hit districts. Through our earthquake response initiative, we are trying to help highly affected children and communities. We need your support for relief and recovery efforts.

What We Are Doing?

CWSN is collaborating with government of Nepal at local level to respond to the needs of the people affected by this calamity. As a member of special rescue and reliefcommittee, CWSN has been working for relief and rehabilitation. We have also started an emergency education in affected areas of western Nepal.

1. Relief Materials Support

We distributed relief materials (tarpaulin and foods) to the earthquake victims in Lamjung, Gorkha and Dhading districts. We have also joined hand with other organization and supported them to distribute materials in other places (by providing transportation and volunteers).

2. Transit Shelter and Health Care

We have been providing transitional supports for the victims who have come to Pokhara from hard hit remote areas. Most of them are from the village called Barpak where earthquake was centered (epicenter). The services have been very helpful for these people because these people cannot go back to home because their houses were demolished and trails are severely damaged (all of them were picked up by choppers). We are providing food, accommodation, medical care, counseling and referral support to the patients and their families. Our services have been highly appreciated by government and stakeholders.

3. Emergency Education Support

In the affected districts, a large number of children (1 million in affected areas) were out of school and many of them are in vulnerable to abuse and psychological problems. Only in Gorkha district, over 90% (out of 497) schools were significantly damaged. There were no safe place and educational materials for teaching and learning. Children's school bags and learning materials were buried under the debris. Children were out of school for over 1 months and were in terrified situation. Under our Emergency Education Support Program, we constructed Temporary Learning Classes (TLCs) and provided teaching/learning materials for 41 schools in 4 VDCs in Gorkha district. Over 4,500 children were benefited by the support. Besides, educational support was provided to 33 displaced children from Dhading district.
